Job and careers

To carry out its fundamental missions of research, consultancy and capacity-building activities and training for the benefit of southern countries, IRD employs 2,176 agents:

  • 837 researchers,
  • 997engineers and technicians,
  • 342 local agents (recruited locally by IRD Representations outside France).

Since September 2008, the IRD head office is located in Marseille. The Institute has 30 establishments: 2 in France (Bondy and Montpellier), 5 in the overseas areas and communities (Reunion, Guyana, Martinique, New Caledonia and French Polynesia) and 23 in countries located primarily in the intertropical zone.

37% of the IRD agents work out of the French metropolitan area, in expatriation (an emblematic statute of IRD), for long term missions, or as a local personnel. IRD is involved in development assistance in Africa, Latina America, Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. This represents a wide range of geographical opportunities. The IRD research programs associate french and foreign researchers (mostly originating from the South), offering a real opportunity to work in a true partnership.
Thus, for a real contribution to development assistance, the creativity of the researchers feeds multicultural exchanges and of a work at the heart of the problems of the southern countries.
