As a multidisciplinary institute, the IRD affirms its specific approach by conducting a research aligned with the needs of the South. Focused on the relationship between man and its environment in tropical and Mediterranean regions, research themes are defined together with the teams and partners from the South.
Furthermore, the IRD encourages its northern partners to involve themselves in the backyards of the South and aim eventually for the autonomy of local teams. The achieved results take the form of joint publications, patents and of a systematic sharing of knowledge.
