Observatories for Science of the Universe / Oceanographic research fleet
Through its joint supervision of joint service units, the IRD is a partner of the Observatories for Science of the Universe (“Observatoires des sciences de l’univers” or OSU),
which are internal university schools, each consisting of several research units and teams. The mission of the OSU is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge through the collection of observational data, the development and exploitation of appropriate resources and the establishment of theoretical tools required in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, solid Earth sciences, marine and atmosphere sciences, and of surface sciences and sciences of the continental environment. They are also responsible for providing services related to their research activities, for training students and research staff, for sharing knowledge, and for implementing international cooperation activities.
The mission of the "French oceanographic Fleet (FOF)" joint service unit is to develop the programming of the ships and of the heavy equipment of its four members, to coordinate investment policies and to anticipate the renewal of the national fleet, taking into account the European dimension of the fleet.
