Job and careers
To carry out its fundamental missions of research, consultancy and capacity-building activities and training for the benefit of southern countries, IRD employs nearly 2,200 agents:
- 40% researchers,
- 45% engineers and technicians,
- 15% local agents (recruited locally by IRD Representations outside France).
Since September 2008, the IRD head office is located in Marseille. The Institute has 30 establishments: 2 in France (Bondy and Montpellier), 5 in the overseas areas and communities (Reunion, Guyana, Martinique, New Caledonia and French Polynesia) and 23 in countries located primarily in the intertropical zone.
Half the IRD agents work out of the French metropolitan area, in expatriation (an emblematic statute of IRD), for long term missions, or as a local personnel. IRD is involved in development assistance in Africa, Latina America, Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. This represents a wide range of geographical opportunities. The IRD research programs associate french and foreign researchers (mostly originating from the South), offering a real opportunity to work in a true partnership.
Thus, for a real contribution to development assistance, the creativity of the researchers feeds multicultural exchanges and of a work at the heart of the problems of the southern countries.
