On 2 December 2021, a UN resolution was adopted promulgating 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD 2022). IRD is a partner of this initiative.
The United Nations General Assembly thus recognises the importance of basic sciences in achieving the Agenda 2030 and its 17 sustainable development goals.
It “invites all Member States, United Nations agencies and other international, regional and sub-regional organisations, as well as other relevant stakeholders, including academia and civil society, inter alia, international and national non-governmental organisations, individuals and the private sector, to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of basic sciences for sustainable development, in line with their national priorities”.
The successes and challenges of the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years have been a stark reminder of this importance of basic sciences, such as (but not limited to) biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and anthropology.
The International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD 2022) will be officially launched during an opening conference on 30 June and 1 July 2022 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Related events and activities will be held worldwide until June 30, 2023.
IRD is a partner of IYBSSD 2022 and actively supports this initiative.
