IRD presented its One Health research projects at the Lao Colloquium "One health in practice" organized on October 13

IRD with the National University of Laos (NUOL) and the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) organized the "One health in practice" Symposium on October 13. This event was an opportunity for IRD researchers to present their projects related to the One Health approach to students and specialists from the University.

The "One Health in Practice" colloquium was first introduced by the Vice-Minister of Education and Sports, Dr. Sisouk VONGVICHITH and by the Counsellor of the Cooperation and Cultural Action Service of the French Embassy in Laos, Nathalie Brat. The President of the National University of Laos, Dr. Oudom Phonekhampheng, then welcomed all the participants.

After these speeches, the French delegation accompanied the NUOL leaders to the premises of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), located in the University campus. The AUF Representative in Laos, Dr. Marieke Charlet, received them. She explained the role of her institution but also its projects with the National University of Laos.

The presentation of the Lao One Health projects started with presentations by Lao scientists from NUOL, each presenting the objectives of their programs, their methodologies and their possible first results.

Among the Lao scientists, the CEO of the Mounoy Dev start-up, with which IRD is working on the Lao Cricket Farm project, spoke to explain his work in setting up sensors to optimize local cricket farms. The Lao Cricket Farm project is a program funded by the FSPI One Health in Southeast Asia.

Following these presentations, Dr. Karine Peyronnie detailed her research programs around green cities in Vientiane but also on the green development of urban planning policies in Laos. During this intervention, two of her lao partners explained their collaborations with Dr Karine Peyronnie.

Following the theme of urban planning, Vietnamese PhD student Tien Tam Nguyen presented the ReycUrbs-Viet JEAI to the NUOL students. The JEAI is an IRD program that aims to develop and strengthen research teams in the South. The objective of this research team is to better understand the impact of the collection, sorting, resale and recycling of waste collected by mobile waste collectors and scavengers on the functioning of the city of Hanoi. Tien Tam Nguyen took students to task during his speech, which created rich exchanges with his audience.

Finally, Dr. Sabrina Locatelli described the different IRD projects funded by OHSEA or dealing with the "One Health" approach, such as:

She highlighted in her speech the importance of studying infectious diseases that have passed from animals to humans in order to better prevent emerging and re-emerging diseases.
