Cape Town, South Africa, will host the 7th International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC7) from October 13-18, 2024. Organized by the Society for Conservation Biology (SBC) Marine Program, this biennial event is a cornerstone in the marine conservation calendar. Sign up for the workshop organised by one of our researchers, Adrien Comte (UMR LEMAR).
Under the theme "Making Marine Science Matter," IMCC7 emphasizes the role of marine science in shaping effective conservation strategies. Gathering over 800 delegates from diverse backgrounds, the congress aims to engage a broad range of stakeholders, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange. The congress will feature sessions on a variety of critical topics such as fisheries, aquaculture, marine food systems, Arctic and Antarctic conservation, conservation engineering, ocean science technology, and climate change.
A highlight of the conference is the on-day workshop on "Social-Ecological Systems Transformations as Pathways to Conservation", co-organized by Adrien Comte (IRD - UMR LEMAR) and Shauna Mahajan (WWF) with support from Rodolphe Devillers (IRD – ESPACE DEV). This workshop will explore how scientific information can support transformations in marine social-ecological systems (SES). Discussions will focus on necessary transformations to achieve sustainable development goals, conservation science approaches, and modes of scientific engagement for greater impact. The workshop will cover the definition of transformation and transformative pathways, type of knowledge and knowledge systems, modes of data production/representation/delivery for decision making. Discussions will also tackle the ways scientists, with other stakeholders, can overcome known barriers to co-produce knowledge to enable transformational change.
