Four years on, the consolidated results show real progress. IRD has increased its visibility and influence in Brussels, and more IRD researchers are involved in European programming and calls for projects. This has led to greater financial resources to conduct development research projects in the labs.
IRD actively participates in the European programmes' calls for projects, primarily the Horizon 2020 Research-Innovation programme and the EuropeAid programme for Cooperation and Development.
As part of the EU Research and Innovation programme (H2020), IRD has invested a great deal in global topics that call for cooperation with developing countries, such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, risks of pandemics, migration issues.
Under the EU Development Programme (EuropeAid), IRD has placed research components in various development projects (nutrition, migration, health). These have generated a highly positive response from European delegations in the countries concerned.
And finally, IRD can reap the benefits of obtaining an ERC consolidatorin 2019.

Other key items
The MAD project (H2020-RISE) aims to create an international network of interaction between researchers from Europe, Mexico, Argentina and Australia working on two topics: the reproductive biology of plants and the development of innovative solutions for sustainable agriculture (total budget €1 million, DIADE UMR).
In 2019, IRD secured 4 new research projects under the Europe-Africa Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP2). These projects aim to develop diagnostic tools, vaccines, and public health protocols against tropical infectious diseases (Tuberculosis, Malaria, Ebola).
And in the future
In 2020, the last year of the current multi-annual EU budget, the Institute will continue its internal efforts to keep increasing the number of European projects with teams in the Global South, while also pursuing its incentive actions for ERC grants.
Respecting the renewal of European programmes for 2021-2027 (Horizon EUROPE and the continuation of EuropeAid), IRD will step up its advocacy for "more research with developing countries".
