The first regional workshop on "Southeast Asia environmental systems" organised at USTH-VAST by LOTUS IJL and SOOT-SEA IRN, in partnership with their partners from CARE IJL, WATER-4C JEAI and PASSPORT-2C IRN, was held in Hanoi from 5 to 7 December, with the support of IRD and USTH. It was followed by the SOOT-SEA IRN kick-off meeting organised in partnership with USTH from 7 to 8 December.

The aim of the "Southeast Asia environmental systems" regional workshop was to connect scientists from different disciplines, methodologies and fields, but working on common issues and problems (climate, pollution, continent-ocean continuum, marine and coastal ecosystems, etc.), in order to encourage the emergence and construction of collaborative research and training projects on a regional scale.

This interdisciplinary workshop brought together 80 participants from laboratories and institutes in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and France, who presented their work on subjects relating to the evolution of regional systems and coastal, deltaic and marine environments in the face of various natural and anthropogenic factors of variability: estuarine and coastal hydrodynamics, sea level rise, delta subsidence, sediment transport, fate of contaminants, regional and urban climate, vulnerability and adaptation of populations.

The next regional workshop is scheduled for spring 2025.

The kick-off meeting of SOOT-SEA (Impact of Black Carbon In South-East Asia) IRN (International Research Network) for its second phase (2023-2026) brought together the community of Vietnamese, Thai and French scientists (researchers and students) working on Black Carbon (or soot carbon) in South-East Asia. After a general presentation of the SOOT-SEA IRN, the various partners (USTH, MIO, IGE, VNU, CARE, HCMUT, HCMUS, CHU, AIT, CMU, etc.) presented their past/current/future activities relating to the distribution, dynamics and impact of Black Carbon in the atmospheric and aquatic compartments.
